The Homestudy


The homestudy, also known as the pre placement report, is required for every adoption by the state, Immigration and Naturalization Service (for international adoptions), and the foreign countries where adoption takes place. It is the first step in the process of adoption.

The homestudy talks about your motivation and preparation to adopt, your family history and marriage, your home, finances and health. In addition a check with the Washington State Patrol (differs by state) and Department of Social and Health Services child abuse records. A favorable homestudy is your permission to adopt a child.

There are three primary steps to the homestudy. First, is the required background check by the Washington State Patrol and by Department of Social and Health Services in their child abuse registry. Second is the data phase, which includes the gathering of information, physical examination, and references. Third is the homevisit. It is possible to complete the homestudy in as little as 6-8 weeks.

If there are problems that arise during the homestudy they will be discussed with you and that discussion will ways to move forward.
